Convictions of Immigrants Often Result in Deportation

Many people accused of crimes in the United States waive their rights when they are arrested. Because they do not understand the complexities of the legal process, many people do not realize when they waive important rights in their criminal proceedings. In fact, many people do not realize the gravity of their cases until they are challenged by other negative consequences as a result of their conviction.

Be it employment or immigration problems, a criminal conviction has severe negative impacts on an individual's opportunities to succeed in the United States. People convicted of felonies may lose their rights to certain benefits such as social security benefits and the ability to obtain housing benefits in government run housing facilities.

For non-citizens, a criminal conviction can easily result in their deportation from the United States. Many non-citizens do not understand that even if they have lawful status in this country, such lawful status, like those of green-card holders, can be revoked after they are convicted of an offense.

More problematic for non-citizens, even after an individual's criminal case is resolved at the criminal court level, the record of proceedings that is developed in the criminal court can readily be used against that non-citizen in order to deport the person.
